Instrumentation and commissioning in Nisku, Leduc and Edmonton

Lock Hill Energy Services Ltd. installs, calibrates and loop checks instrumentation, and commissions generators, transfer switches, switchgear and electrical systems. We are a licensed Alberta electrical contractor based in Nisku, in Leduc County. We serve Leduc, Nisku, Beaumont and Edmonton first, and work across Western Canada, the Northwest Territories and Yukon, with 24/7 service at 780-387-6119.

What instrumentation work do we do?

Our instrumentation crews work on process plants, oilfield sites, power generation and mining. The work includes:

  • Instrument installation, including industrial sensors and transmitters
  • Measurement systems installation
  • Control wiring and terminations
  • Calibration
  • Loop checks, testing and verification
  • SCADA and instrumentation electrical tie-ins on oilfield sites

Electrical and instrumentation under one contractor means one crew, one schedule and a clean turnover. For the electrical side of a project, see industrial electrical.

PLC programming, SCADA and HMI

We do PLC programming and SCADA/HMI work in-house. We also install, wire and commission the systems. Our automation and controls work covers:

  • PLC programming and system integration
  • SCADA and HMI work
  • Generator control systems
  • Control panel builds in our Nisku shop

What does commissioning include?

We commission generators, transfer switches, switchgear and electrical systems up to 34.5 kV. Commissioning covers:

  • Pre-start checks
  • Startup
  • Electrical testing and verification
  • Functional and load testing
  • System integration testing
  • Performance verification
  • Turnover documentation

We wire it, land it and prove it under load before it goes into service.

Generator commissioning and load bank testing

Generator commissioning includes startup and a load bank test on the new installation. We load bank test standby and prime generators up to 5 MW, and our generator test reports follow CSA C282. We also use load bank testing for annual tests and post-repair verification. See generator maintenance and load bank testing for the full service, and standby generators for home, farm and business backup power.

Shop-tested before it ships

Our modular buildings are fabricated, wired, integrated and tested in our Nisku shop before they ship: e-houses, process interface buildings, control rooms, analyzer shelters and power skids. Testing in the shop means less field wiring and a shorter site schedule.

Projects

Some of our projects:

  • Desert Sun Solar Park, Leduc County: a 150 kW solar photovoltaic plant. Our scope ran from engineering design through construction and commissioning of the array and its grid connection.
  • Hyperscale data centre, Nisku: a 50 MW power upgrade with new UPS systems, redundant switchgear, PDUs and emergency generator integration, including cabling and testing of all new electrical components.
  • Data centre critical power, Nisku: critical power for a 10 MW (IT load) data centre, including dual 500 kW utility feeds, 2.5 MVA UPS systems, redundant 2 MW diesel generator sets, automatic transfer switches and power monitoring.
  • Automation upgrade at an Alberta food processing plant.

See our projects for more.
